Description:
“This Is Hell!” is broadcast live from 9 a.m. till
11 a.m. (central time) on Saturday mornings, on
WNUR 89.3 FM, and live on the web via Real audio
at www.wnur.org. Just click on “live
webcast.”

WNUR has the strongest signal of any college radio station in the United States, which is like saying it’s the world’s fastest Yugo. But hey, we ecently won Real audio's Live Squawk "Streamers" award for the best Real Audio radio station expanded on the net.

“This Is Hell!” is a public affairs/community service broadcast that features news, interviews and media criticism. We have featured folks who help the homeless, encourage the all-American melting pot, work to fix the public schools and mass transit, and the real heroes who attempt to breathe new life into the dying neighborhoods that are ignored by the Gold Coast reporters and journalists who paste their pretty faces all over the news every night.

We’ve also featured big name freaks like Michael Moore, Terry Jones of Monty Python, Kevin Poulsen, the first guy banned by the government from the web, Count Zero of Cult of the Dead Cow, Gary Webb who broke the CIA-Crack-Contra complicity story and April Oliver who was fired by CNN for her sarin nerve gas story. Check out the show listings below to see who we’ve had on. Every week we’ll post a new announcement about that week’s show. And we have a website that will be completely and regularly updated as of May 19, 1999. It’s at
http://homepage.interaccess.com/~saaf

The public interest should neither be forgotten or made intentionally boring, which seems to be the case with today’smedia. We want to turn the world on its head by airing information and opinions that differ from what we are currently force fed by the corporate and celebrity dominated media, that is fueled by pseudo-journalists whose careers are merely a substitute for being just a smidge too ugly to be fashion models.

We are often asked why our show is called "This Is Hell!" Yeah, this name might gnaw on the hand that we hope will feed us like some juicy delicious cud, but something needs to be done.

We’re willing to tell you about the ugliness of the world around us and not ignore it like the mainstream media does. Replacing news with free in-house cross-promotional advertising is incestuous and does a disservice to everyone.

"This Is Hell!" is where you find the stories and perspectives that have been banished from the punditocracy’s paradise of profit and corporate acquiescence. Despite the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and selective memories of media giants' lobbying lawyers, the airwaves, as the Supreme Court decided back in the 1930's, are the public's domain.

Broadcasting in the public interest should not be a requirement, rather it should be what a broadcaster wants to do out of a sense of responsibility to the audience. After all, the airwaves are the public's, we’re just borrowing them.

Brave enough to be live, dumb enough to be goofy, stupid enough to think that we can be a regular part of your Saturday morning hangover - “This Is Hell!”

Our Revolting Neighbors! - August 21st show   chuck
Thu, August 19,1999 07:08:17PM
Our revolting neighbors are up to something or
other, but it can’t be good. Or can it?

Find out this Saturday morning, August 21, as
“This Is Hell!” talks to a guy who just got
back from a visit with the Mexico Solidarity
Project in the Chiapas, a Nunavut newspaper
editor, and the author of a book about the
hopeless war on drugs that could be pulling
us into a real war in Colombia.

We’ll be interviewing Tom Hansen, director of
the Chiapas Media Project (http://www.cmp.org).
Tom’s not allowed in Mexico so Danny Postel,
who just returned from the Chiapas which he
visited at the invitation of the Mexico
Solidarity Network
(http://www.mexicosolidarity.org), will tell
us what’s going on down Mexico way.

Danny hosts Free Associations Radio here in
Chicago (http://www.freespeech.org/associations).

Jim Bell, editor of the Nunatsiaq News (http://
www.nunavut.com), the Iqaluit newspaper
with the Northern News You Can Trust, will
tell us about the recently acquired autonomy
of the Nunavut Territory in Canada’s former
Northwest Territories.

Mike Gray, author of “Drug Crazy: How We Got
Into This Mess & How We Can Get Out” (Random
House), will give us the skinny on the
“violence, corruption and chaos” that have
defined America’s war on drugs since 1914.

Your bitter blind broke gap-toothed host Chuck

September 4 show WE NEED YOUR HELP!!   chuck
Fri, September 03,1999 09:38:26AM
Big media wants you to think of Hollywood stars
and athletes as America’s heroes. It just makes
sense. The Hollywood and the sports industry
give Big Media ratings.

Yet, there have been Americans who have given
their lives for the Democratic process, and
their stories go quietly, or completely ignored.

“This Is Hell!”

In our special live Labor Day weekend broadcast
this Saturday morning, September 4, from 9 a.m.
till 10:30 a.m. (central time) “This Is Hell!”
celebrates the prophet of American community
organizing, Saul Alinsky. “This Is Hell!” is
broadcast every Saturday on WNUR 89.3 FM and
live on the web at http://www.wnur.org. Just
click on “live webcast.”

Your bitter blind broke gap-toothed host Chuck
Mertz interviews Bob Hercules and Bruce Orenstein,
co-producers of “The Democratic Process: Saul
Alinsky & His Legacy.” This documentary will be
broadcast on Chicago’s local PBS affiliate, WTTW
Channel 11, on Labor Day evening, Monday,
September 6, at 9 p.m. Other PBS stations around
the country will begin airing it in November.

Find out more about Bob and Bruce under “This
Saturday” at our website
http://homepage.interaccess.com/~saaf

Also, beginning this week, Wednesday, September 8,
our website's Daily Word will have new columns
every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday
from
your host. If you would like to submit work to be
published free from editing in the Daily Word,

Weird wacky schedule this week - but why not?

This Is Hell!

From 9 a.m. till just past 10, this Saturday
morning,September 11, “This Is Hell!” will be
broadcast live on WNUR 89.3 FM and live on the
web at http://www.wnur.org. Just click on “live
webcast.”

...and then we will return for a special two
hour broadcast immediately following
Northwestern football. So you can catch us from
about 2 p.m. till 4 as well.

In the first early morning hour-long show,
you’ll hear Jeff Dorchen deliver his Moment of
Truth, and Laddie-O-dot-com will give us the
latest web and tech news from the hermetically
sealed clean room of URL Labs.

Breaking news, the morning's headlines, This
Day in Rotten History, all brought to you by
the fine folks over at National Beer - remember,
it's all in your head - this Saturday morning
at 9 a.m

Then sometime after the game, around 2:00 or
2:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon, “This Is Hell!”
will return with a live interview and a couple
of interviews from our vault.

Your bitter blind broke gap-toothed host Chuck
Mertz interviews Leah Bobal, associate editor
and reporter for Inside Publications, a
neighborhood newspaper chain here in Chicago.

This weekend the Lincoln Square neighborhood
hosts Germanfest, an annual Oktoberfest-like
celebration that draws thousands from all
over the Chicagoland area.

But behind this happy facade are vacant stores,
shady landlords, conflicts-of-interest, hincty
politics, allegations of mob-like corruption,
and the evil long-horned Asian beetle.

So before you go down to the neighborhood to
choke down brats and beers, give Leah a listen
as she clues us in on what’s really happening
in Lincoln Square.

...and from our vault...

- Peter Phillips, director of Project Censored
and author of "Censored 1998: The News That
Didn't Make the News." Since Project Censored
started monitoring the news in 1976, they have
touched on stories that would in later years
finally be covered by the mainstream, like the
tobaccoindustry's marketing to kids, hazards of
nuclear power, fraudulent safety tests, and the
monopolization of the media. You can check out
their web site at
http://www.sonoma.edu/projectcensored

- Liane Casten, chair of Chicago Media Watch,
will fill us in on what's happening with
bio-engineered and genetically modified foods,
a story that is being ignored by the American
media while getting great attention all over
the rest of the world. Liane, author of "Breast
Cancer: Poisons, Profits and Prevention" (Common
Courage Press) will also discuss the recent
findings concerning silicon breast implants.
Their website is
http://www.mediawatch.org/chicago

- Dennis Bernstein and Leslie Kean, authors of
Henry Hyde's Moral Universe: Where More Than
Time and Space are Warped" (Common Courage).
Yeah, it's a bit like shooting fish in a barrel,
but apparently "Big Media" can't even find the
barrel.

...and maybe we can get to some tapes on human
secularism, sex workers’ rights or the
hopelessness of the war on drugs.

The September Illinois Entertainer refered to
us as a “crew of miscreants” and if you want

The Move   Glabman
Tue, May 31,2005 08:10:50AM
Well I got the keys after a very stressful day of
work on friday, and the doorbell does not work.
so it starts off with a stumbling block but with
a few phone calls i finally get into the place.
The toliet does not flush, is the first thing
on the list as i can't live there without one,
my friend onion comes over to help me, and we
get a few trips in, moving the delicate and
breakable stuff, but soon the rains come and i
can't move across the street in the rain, things
will get trashed, so at nine PM he leaves, and i
am there tearing down the bed frame and other
packing, i pass out around midnight for a few
hours and wake before dawn.

Saturday starts in a blur and haze, i get a
call from the movers, they want to come six hours
early, but i am not ready, they can't ask me
without any notice, so i say keep the schedule,
which i knew was asking for trouble, no fresh
legs, and then they were two hours late. i knew i
was in for a screwing, but how bad would it be?

at 3:15 on saturday we started the major
furniture, the heavy stuff, they decided to take
it all down, load the truck and drive it across
the street and bring it up, took alot longer than
we thought and cost me way more than i planned,
and still it was not nearly empty. THIS IS HELL

saturday evening brian came by to help me, and at
least i was not alone. THANKS BRIAN. also THANKS
TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO HELPED FROM SAM MATUAZAK
who helped the most to THANKS TO THE ONION,
THANKS TO MY MOM< MARK NELSON, DAVID SIEGFRIED,
DIEGO TREJO JR., MATT BENDER, TONY AGNEW, so i
still have a little bit of work tonight after
working here all day.

So Sunday sore tired and in pain, i strapped on
my knee pads and get to work. My mom shows up
first with some corned beef and bagels, and she
is a great mom, very good at organizing, so she
starts unpacking the kitchen while i start moving
stuff over, finally after two painful hours of
drenching sweat and leg cramps, Mark shows up and
lends some leg work for a couple of hours, then
Sam, Then David and finally i got a big crew, and
we get some work done, My Mom splits, then Mark
leavews then David and it is me and sam humping
till Diego shows up and I got three of us again,
so much work. So I finish up Sunday, Dead as a
Door, just swinging in the breeze. Nothing really
broke except very minor stuff, two plants got
dumped, two glasses broke, a few more little
stuff nothing major. my stereo cabinet got a big
scratch on the top of it, oh well. i took another
hot bath, watched a great nascar race from
charlotte with twenty five major crashes, the
most in nascar history for one race. I passed out
hard.
woke early monday morning with the weather
nice, it was going to be harder to get help, I
start alone for two hours and i am completely
soaked sore and dehydrated already, can't drink
enough water, i am working like a madman, finally
Matt shows up for a couple of hours, and it helps
just having someone with me, but he has top split
early and do something else, so i alone for two
more hours, it is really tough as each stair
feels like mount everest. i am so cashed when sam
knocks on the door and what a great sight to see
some help, so it is the two of us and i get a
boost of energy, i start calling everyone i know,
i need legs, but most friends are partying or
with family, but Tony comes thru big time and it
was his birthday (which i did not know) I felt
bad but he said it was cool, that everyday is his
birthday and he appreciates all i do for him, and
how easy i make life for my friends. he busted
ass and we all were really humping, and tony was
giving me the added incentive of JUST THROW IT
AWAY, and so stuff i would always save got
tossed, ten old wireless phones, two old tape
decks, two scanners, and just lots of stuff. the
garbage pickers were out in full force as it was
a mass exodus from my building, the long termers
just had so much stuff, the apartments being so
big, and all of us being there so long, made it
too comfortable. so i have to pare down, big
time, and as soon as i get a little organized, i
will start selling off stuff again.
ok continued soon

Hope you had a great 40th birthday, as france
declined the EC or is it the EU. i heard the
dutch are going to vote it down tomorrow.
simon you were there in spirit. not one of my
friends had to lift anything heavy or awkward,
just lots of stairs, i left the heavy stuff to
the pro's. yes the salt is awesome,i can't
believe how much it helps, i hope to be out of
hell by tonight and start redoing my entire life.
i have signed up for a new phone and computer
system, i will have high speed DSL, call waiting,
call ID, voice mail, three way calling, no busy
signals, able to talk on the phone and use the
computer at the same time, what an upgrade. new
house has light switches everywhere, and it is
funny how i keep trying to reach for the string
to turn on the lights, and ceiling fans, but my
space is less, but i will deal with it. it smells
so fresh and clean.
so getting out of hell, i need some fun, some
lovin, some beauty, some nature, "i used to just
want but now I NEED" buzzcocks 1979
